wedding dresses : Just so everyone knows- you can (99% of the time) get **any** bride, bridesmaid or mothers dress in up to a size 42 or 44. If you are asize 20 but see a size 6 dress then don't despair- you **CAN** orderit. The only problem you might run into is that you can't try it onthe way you would want. Again, most any dress can be ordered in thesize you want whether it is a $200, $2000 or $5000 gown! I also thinkconsignment shops are a great way to go. I have seriously beenconsidering opening one for a while! Lisa Ann TrainorThe Wedding Person andEditor, Alt.wedding FAQORIGINAL POST:I also found my gown in a size 20. Frankly, it was depressing. I couldn'tafford a high priced 'salon' gown, and I think I'm a little self-consciousabout clothes shopping anyway. I found a nice gown in my size that'sactually flattering (!) in a discount bridal store (in San Francisco, unfortuneatly). I also connected with the owner of a bridalconsignment/resale shop, gave her my phone number, and asked her to callLisa Ann Taylor writes: I started my gown shopping and as a larger bride I can tell you, it isnot fun! In fact, it is quite depressing. Yes, you can in fact *order*a dress in a larger size, but you can't even try it on first. The dressesthey had samples of in my size where horrible... potato sack styledresses. I was horrified! Meanwhile, all the smaller size brides whipdresses on and off like nothing. I just have to stand there holding itin front of me with no clue what it will look like on me until Iplop down $$$$ and commit myself to it forever (the shop I was in said thatthey would change the size for me ifit didn't fit right, but I wasbasically stuck with the style once I ordered it).If anyone knows of a store in New england that will carry (in sample stock)larger sized normal gowns... please let me know. I will drive anywhere! Thanks!A newly engaged Sam (as of February 14!!)
wedding dresses : I went to Marry and Tux in Nashua, NH. (About 45 minutes north of Boston). They have sizes 4-44 available, although their large size selection is somewhat limited, I thought. But even though there weren't a lot of dresses, the styles were different, ranging from Cinderella type to a bit too modern for me. I did get a beautiful dress there (never thought to find out who the designer was; the price seemed reasonable to me so we got it).You can also check David's Bridal Wearhouse, and believe it or not, Building 19. One of my co-workers got her dress at Building 19 for less than $200.Hi! I'm in NYC, and I'd love to know where David's Bridal Wearhouse is. I think it's in New Jersey, but I'm not sure. Also, do you know of anyplaces with larger size wedding dresses that rent them? I also needed a larger sized wedding gown and absolutely dreaded lookingfor one. I agree with the previous posts about holding up a gown infront of you--it just doesn't cut it. So I went to David's Bridal and I almost died. There were so many gowns, racks and racks, in larger sizes (up to 24 or 26 I think). I got to tryon 8 different gowns and they actually fit! The only thing differentabout David's is you get the dress off the rack--it's not like thosesalons that order it for you. But I didn't seem to care because atleast I could try on my gown and make sure I liked it then and there. They have all different styles and price ranges--in fact I tried a gown on and almost bought it for $300. Not too shabby, IMO. wedding dresses : I'm getting married in December and I'mlooking for a traditional dress. I wearbetween a 30-32W and am wondering ifany of you can give me advice as to whereto look. I'm definitely working on a budgetand therefore can't really afford to havemy dress made. I did find one really niceplace on the web, but I hate just settlingfor one place without knowing all myoptions. I do like one of the dresses Ifound, but their largest size is a 30W andI'm afraid it will be too small - sincewedding gowns tend to run small fromwhat I've heard. Please, any and alladvice, help, suggestions etc. would begreatly appreicated. I look forward tohearing from you! :-)-----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- Now offering spam-free web-based newsreadingI just ordered my wedding gown a couple weeks ago so maybe I can help some. First of all, don't worry that the dresses will run small. I had heard thistoo, and perhaps it is true at the smaller end of the size scale. But Inormally wear a 28W, though, and found all the 28W's fit fine through the hipsand were even a little big on top (where I am a little smaller). I even triedon one Alfred Angelo that was a size 44 (which should NO WAY have fit me- it issomewhere between a 22W and 24W) and I was able to get into it and have itlook pretty good. If I had gotten it, the seams would have had to be let out acouple of inches (there was enough fabric for that) - but I didn't want to gothat route. wedding dresses : Have you looked in the clothing FAQ? I did when I first started looking forwedding gowns and it had a lot of good resources.I would recommend calling bridal shops and asking if they have large sizes instock that you can try on. I went to two and they both had several in 28W andone had a 30W. At the shop where I ended up getting my dress, the womanhelping me was very nice - she even showed me a catalog from a company thatwill make a dress for you in one of their basic patterns with the fabric anddetails you specify. I don't think this was any more expensive than any of theother dresses, in fact I think it was less since the dresses were fairlysimple. Plus it didn't sound like they had any size cutoff. If you want moreinfo on this let me know and I can call the bridal shop and ask the name of thecompany. Yes! God, I'm such a moron that I didn't think of this. :) I went to mostof the shops in town and came home either furious or in tears from all buttwo or three of them, because they *didn't* have larger sizes to try on,and the ever-so-helpful sales people kept suggesting that either I try andsqueeze my size 20 butt into their size 10 dresses (which is a) difficultand b) depressing) or else they'd chirp about how we could just hold it upin front of me and then we'd be able to see how it would look. Ah, no. wedding dresses : Also check consignment stores, if you can. I got my dress at a consignmentstore, and I love it. They usually don't have a good selection in stock, but if you call up and say "Hi, I'm looking for a dress in this size, doyou have any? Okay, well, if any come in, could you give me a call?"waaaay in advance of when you need it, I'd bet there's a good chance thatthey'll get some in and give you a call. You need to have lots of time inorder for this to work, though, since you're dependent on other peopleselling their dresses, which is hard to schedule. :)Don't rule out having a dress made until you check into the cost. I am aboutyour size, and worked with a seamstress to design my own dress and had itcustom sewn for about $400 ($350 for the seamstress and $50 for thematerials), which was cheaper than what I looked at in the bridalcatalogs--plus the dress was _exactly_ what I wanted and fit me perfectly thefirst time. I did quite a bit of shopping around to get the best prices onmaterials, which saved quite a bit since satin, lace, and especially trimworkcan vary a lot in price.
