bridal dresses : There's a show on Vera Wang on Bravo, which shows her designing a new lineof bridal dresses. Just thought it might be of interest to some.I was surprised by her veils, which appear to be just pieces of nettingcut into particular shapes, e.g. circle, square, triangular with curves inback, etc. and just laid atop the bride's head! Does anyone know if shedoes other things to attach or gather these things, or if this is reallyher intention? Many of them shown were short, falling around thecollarbone. They looked sort of cute, but I cannot say how one walksaround with just a piece of fabric draped over their head and blowing intotheir face as they propel forward. ???Having had recent occasion to look at some old wedding pictures, I wassurprised at how 60's brides seemed to wear some type of little "crown"with the veil poofing out of the top (and also a veil piece underneath).Interesting. Some very old pictures, around 1900's, showed more of a long(perhaps waist, knee, or longer?) flat veil hanging down over the hair andbody, sometimes held up with flowers at the front or sides.
bridal dresses : Anyway, back to Vera Wang, it was interesting how she was talking aboutshowing that bridal dresses can be sensual and body conscious, while stilllooking "bridal". I especially liked one she was fixing in her shop onthe model, with gathered ruffles. It was very body-hugging, but had theseadorable ruffles and "fluffy" elements to give it that "bride" look.The dress that she herself wore to her wedding, I thought was utterlygruesome. It was baffling (or, maybe not, paradoxically) that this bridaldesigner would wear such a bad dress to her own wedding.... it was like,too many ideas going on at once.... while her own dresses, by contrast,are cool because they put together two or three ideas that work withoutoverwhelming each other.I miss the fluffy, all-lace dresses of yore! It is quite an experience towear one.... to wear anything that requires a couple of petticoats, inthis day and age. Very fun, very "fairy tale". I don't see too manyfairy dresses nowadays that move me. Most of them are either created tomake the bride look like a FAIRY (i.e. with a tulle ballerina tinkerbelleskirt), rather than a fairy-tale princess. And the other "big" dressesare so loaded down with cutouts and beading and junk that a person wouldbe drowned alive in them. Where is the good fluff? I wish I could designa good fluffy dress.
bridal dresses : This is my first actual posting, but I've been observing for a while andhaven't seen this question addressed.I've thought about renting my dress, but what about the bridesmaids? Is itrude for me to rent and then ask them to buy dresses? What if they havethem made? I don't want to be inconsiderate, but I can't afford to buy a *really*expensive dress and I will be paying for most of the wedding myself(andwith my fiance.)Any advice? I have plenty of time, but I like to stay ahead of schedule.Oops, forgot to add about the renting thing. I am renting my veil and know that you can rent bridesmaid dresses. There is an800 number to call which has all of the locations. I did notmention it because the dresses were $70+ which was more than I wanted to pay to rent a dress. I will look it up at home andpost the number anyway if I still have it. I also looked atconsignment shops and found a few dresses. My best bet wasthe department store though.Hello, I too was on a tight budget. I found dresses formy bridesmaids at Macy's on sale for $50 It is a floral printdress and is perfect for my garden wedding. It is asimilar style to the bridesmaid dresses in the magazines. If you finda dress at a department store that is not in the sizes you wantsome stores will charge send all the dresses in the sizes youwant at no charge to your home. This is what I did and it worked out perfectly. I also have some great money saving ideas as follows:
bridal dresses : * We are having it at a garden and old historical home which is run by the Parks and Recreations. The key here is Parks and Recreations because they are not out to get you. They are charging us only $550 for 8 hours. * Invitations can be ordered at 20% off through Discount Bridal Service or through mail order catalogs * There are great outlets in the San Francisco Bay Area. I got my dress for $20 at the Gunne Sax outlet during their January sale. On a non-sale day the bridal gowns run $100 to $300 dollars. The bridesmaid dresses on the second floor run $15 - $40 but sometimes have flaws. I could go on about good places for good deals, but I won't bore you.The estates in Boston charge well over $1,000 for 7 hours. I believe theLyman Estate is up to $3000 for 7 hours; I think the Paine and BCAE areslightly under $2000.Anyways, my point is that, to me, $550 seems a bargain for an estate. Andhere in Massachusetts, it's not so outrageous to spend bucks for an estatecompared to a hotel/restaurant reception, since you can pay liquor store prices for the alcohol and save a bundle on those costs.
