bridal fabric : From: ()Subject: Re: Summary: FABRIC Newsgroups: Date: 1993-08-31 09:15:33 PST (and many thanks to all who e-mailed me and posted!)There's a Fabric Place in Framingham at 136 Howard Streetthat also has a store at Woburn Mall in Woburn."New England's Largest Fabric Selection and a Great Deal More"Went to the one in Woburn last night and bought several materials. There were hundreds to choose from! They also have all the quilting toolsone would want.I regularly go to Ralph Jordan's, Rt 2A in Acton, in the Triple A/Gould'sPlaza. They have a nice selection of fabrics and accessories, plus theygive lots of classes. If you take a class you get a discount on fabrics. There is a new store on Rt 62 in Maynard that was started up by a teenagerinterested in quilting. It is near the McDonald's. I haven'tchecked it out yet. It sounds like it would be a nice place to stop in andswap quilting stories. And I've heard rumors of a fabric store in Westford near the Market Basket, but I have no data. From: ()Subject: Re: Summary: FABRIC Newsgroups: Date: 1993-09-03 06:10:59 PST The store in Westford is in the Westford Valley Marketplace II and isa JoAnn's (large fabric store chain for those unfamiliar with it)--Rita Leonard Boston College 00000100 Computer Center 00000200(617) 552-3403 Chestnut Hill, MA. 02167 00000300 bridal fabric : In metro Boston, try North End Fabrics on Harrison Avenue in Chinatown. There are a lot of fabric stores right in the neighborhood so you canmake an outing of it, but this is my favorite. In Cambridge, visit Tumbleweed in Harvard Square. This is a quilting store; it's the best place I've found yet in the city to buy quilting supplies. It's a small store, but the fabric selection is quite goodand prices are competitive. Also a GREAT book selection. Run byreally nice, wonderful people -- they give classes, too, which ishow I got hooked. I visited the Quilting Bee last week (hi, Lisa!) and had a blast. Ijust wish I'd had more time to spend there. Prices for fabric are morethan what I'm used to paying, but they're certainly not unreasonable, andthe fabrics are lovely. I think my favorite part, though, was the displayquilts on the wall. They were lovely, and gave me lots of ideas for mynext quilt (or rather, the next quilt to get added to the pile of quilts-in-progress ;-) In San Francisco itself, on Geary Street, is Britex Fabrics. I was stayingdown the block and wandered in. It was great, but a little overwhelming! bridal fabric : I'm thinking now about gowns, both for meand my attendants. I want something simpleand elegant! No froo-froo beads, sequins, bows, poofs, etc. I am thinking very high quality clothand simple design.Problem is, I don't even know where to start!I've glanced through pattern books, but haven'tfound anything that catches my eye. I suppose Ineed to find a dressmaker first. Anyone know of a great dressmaker that wouldhave tast similar to my own, so he/she couldmake suggestions? I prefer someone in my localarea (central Illinois) or where my fiance lives(Seattle/Puget Sound). --Katherine (Trina) SauerGraduate Student and Goddess of FunkosityEnvironmental Engineering and ScienceUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-ChampaignActually, I think the first thing you should do, if you haven't already,is to try on some gowns at a few bridal shops. You may change your mind!It was VERY obvious to me after I'd tried a few dresses on that Idefinitely wanted an A-Line dress, something I hadn't even consideredbefore. I was also able to take a very close look at the sleeves and thelength of the trains, and the cut of the neckline and bodice. In fact, Ihave found THE dress, only at a shop I don't want to buy it at!!! bridal fabric : So first you should check at the bridal shops, take a notepad, and writedown the names of styles, fabrics, cuts, lengths, and so on. That way, when you go to talk to a seamstress, that person will know exactly whatsort of cut and style you want overall, and can suggest the best fabricsfor the look and support for that type of gown.I second that. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, but fell inlove with (and bought) a dress nothing like it. I thought I wanted something with a lace or beaded top and a plain butfull (not poufy) skirt, no train. I wound up with a dress that'scompletely plain (save a few small fabric roses on the shoulders andin a v on the back) silk (dunno if it's shantung or dupioni, I can'ttell the difference) with a train. Have you looked at bridal magazines to see if there are any you like?A good dressmaker can probably start from a picture. To find a seamstress, I'd recommend going to the best fabric store in your area that carries they types of fabrics you might like for your wedding dress. I'd recommend specialty fabric stores over national chains. Most stores of this nature should have a list of seamstresses they recommend. If you'll be using a traditional bridal fabric (silk, satin, etc.), find someone who specializes in bridal gowns.
