bridal flowers : Help! I am thinking of trying to grow flowers (inside the house) for myupcoming wedding reception as a cheap alternative to buying flowers. Cananyone offer me some tips on what is cheapest, easiest, and will growquickly? I will be getting married in the begining of March, so I don'thave a whole lot of time left for them to bloom. I guess I am not tooworried about what color of flowers to grow, but want something that Ican cut for vases or can put into a green florist brick that might havea candle in it too. The flowers do have to grow inside - since we have about 2-3 feet ofsnow outside. Also, must I buy a light for them to grow? We don't havemany windows and the ones that we do have are covered to prevent thecold draft. I am desperate to try to save money for the floral centerpieces, anysuggestions are welcomed.Ever hear the term "green-house"? :)You can grow flowers in your house alright, but enough to "make any impact"on your wedding?... And show-quality (I assume you don't want a bunch ofwilted leaves or no-show roses, etc) plants DOES take experience........Like cooking..
bridal flowers : It depends on what kind of flowers you're looking for, but most flowers dorequire a fair bit of light to bloom. Also, some depend on day length inorder to flower. You would have to know the specific flower's requirementsin order to determine how long you would have to leave your grow-light on.(Yes, you'll need a grow-light; the light from even a southern window inwinter won't be enough.)Your best bet would be flowering houseplants, which don't depend on daylength conditions.Basically, growing flowers for your centrepieces is going to be difficult.Do they HAVE to be flowers? How about green plants? You can start a lot ofthem from seed, or from cuttings. Put them in inexpensive plastic pots,which you can dress up with ribbon, little "picks" from the craft store,etc. The best part is that at the end of the night, people can take themhome and keep them growing, unlike flowers which will die.At my uncle's wedding, the people decorating wrapped bricks in wrappingpaper, then tied helium balloons to them. Sounds hokey, looked great.It doesn't necessarily have to be flowers, especially if it's going to bedifficult for you.
bridal flowers : I think your best bet may be your local grocery "Superstore". The onesaround here frequently have BOGOF on bouquets. I find their prices are ingeneral about 30% less than flower shops. Also don't forget that lots of early spring blooms are imported fromHolland (tulips,daffodills etc.) and for the most part these flowers arereasonably priced.Just make certain that the tulips are very fresh as theydo not have a long shelf life. If I were you I'd go talk to the manager of the flower dept. in the grocerystore near you and ask for their expertise (be non-commital thoughcompetition among these stores is your ally).I'd also ask to see if theyhave any pictures of functions where they furnished the flowers.The grocery stores near me in the Boston area have been advertising thatthey do weddings.Good luck . I think you have some frugal options; but Iwouldn't chance finding out if my "green thumb" were actually a "blackthumb".You could try forcing bulbs - I'm thinking paperwhites - in large-ishquantity, but even then I don't think you'll have a whole lot of stuff.
bridal flowers : Maybe its better to spend your time/efforts elsewhere - like shoppingaround for the cheapest flowers to purchase (supermarket florists can bepretty cheap) and learning flower arranging skills, so you can make yourown arrangements. Or have potted plants as centerpieces - like Africanviolets in a nicely-wrapped pot - very cheap at Home Depot and such. OR,you might be able to pull off a single bloom per-setting, depending on howmany you're inviting - cheap mini terracotta pots (at Jo-Ann craft, i.e.),maybe with a single paperwhite bulb forced in each.... better check agardening/plant site for specific info.Technically, paperwhites don't need to be forced; you just shove them inwater with enough pebbles to support the bulbs, and they'll bloom.Forcing means exposing bulbs to cold temperatures and bringing them intothe warmth earlier than it gets warm normally. I do this every winter -buy bulbs, shove them in the fridge, haul them out and let them grow andbloom. I wouldn't like to try to produce enough for a wedding now, andthe first few times I tried, I learned that you really need top qualitybulbs for it to work, especially if you want the hyacinths or crocus togrow in water. They sometimes do better in soil.
