bridal registry : "Love doesn't make the world go ‘round, Love is what makes the ride worthwhile"---Franklin P. JonesWhen the grave majority of your friends are themselves starving collegestudents, DO NOT register for all your gifts (from 4 pairs of potholdersto kitchen utensils) at Hudsons! Sorry for the gripe, anyone that works for or can afford to shop atHudsons, but as much as I wanted to get me friends something nice fromtheir registry for their wedding, I did not want to pay 2 arms, a leg andmy firstborn! Thanks for listening, and I really hope that this triggers a thought whenpeople register. You may really like a certain store, but are theirexpensive spatulas really any better than ones at Sears or Lechter's?-- Karin and Kevin, wondering if we can register at WalMart. <JK>I'm not sure about WalMart, but you can register at Target. They give you a scanner and you scan what you want. We had a blast. And I completely agree that if you register, you need to have a complete range of items. It was great to register for crystal and china, but I'm not expecting any of my friends, who are living paycheck to paycheck, to get us anything like that! (And I'll understand if they can't financially buy anything, that happens too.)

bridal registry : This was some of the most fun I've had doing a "wedding planning" thing!I went a bit wild with the scanner, which explains why we are registeredfor "Cool Shaving Ken". ;-)We registered both at Burdine's (pricey Southern department store) andTarget. I was able to pick the colors & patterns such that everything will either match or coordinate, no matter where it came from! Thisway, both the relatives with the "bucks" and the friends working temp jobscan find SOMETHING, if they want to give us a gift.Kudos to you for your consideration! I'm not sure I could talk Kev intoregistering at Target, but we *do* need some corel, with the way I tend tobreak dishes this year... :( <grin> Cool Shaving Ken... that's a goodone...John & I just did the registering this weekend. We registered at Target, too. The way we figuredit, is that we only wanted to register for itemsthat we would be willing to pay for ourselves. We made sure that we even got plenty of smaller$5 items for those who want to give but cannotafford a lot. I think the best part for Johnwas that he got to use that cool UPC gun! :)The best part for me was that we also got toselect camping gear and tools (Dad will love that!)

bridal registry : Then, we also registered for the "fancy stuff" atDillard's. Ironically, the china pattern we likedbest was one of the cheapest! I didn't think Iwould like the "help" of the Registry lady, but sheturned out to be very helpful without being pushy.Overall, registering still seems kind of "greedy" tome (as a receiver). But as a gift giver, I've alwaysliked to see what the couple wants. Besides, the advicefrom a coworker is that people WILL give you gifts, butif you don't register it will likely be a bunch of giftsyou'll need to return! We just registered at Target last night. It only took a couple ofhours...they just gave us a hand scanner and let us loose! We willprobably register with a larger department store also, but Target seemedthe more practical choice. We just bought a home, and needed stuff likeoutdoor lights, ladder, shelves for the garage, etc. Sure wouldn't findthis at Lazarus. They did not have a large choice of decorating items and dishes, sowe'll have to include that when we register at the dept. store. I agree. We are registering at one of the brand name stores, mainlyfor finishing pieces of our china, and silverware. But on the whole, most ofour registry is coming from Target. That may sound tacky to some, butjustcoming out of college, and neither of our families wealty, it is best. Plus, there's some really nice things at Target, that are majorly marked up in department stores!!

bridal registry : Genelle did something that I think was very wise. Yes, she and Doughave a household. However, there are a few things that are old and needto be replaced and other things that they would like to have. When theyregistered at Daytons and Target they registered for things in all priceranges. One of the things they would like is a nice card table andchair set. For one person to buy them this would be very expensive. However, several people going together (like I try to do when someonefrom work gets married) will give them a gift they like and will use andwill be able to not have to spend a fortune individually. There isnothing wrong with registering for some (notice I say some) higherpriced items expecting that some people will go together to get one nicething rather than a lot of little things the couple will not need. She also registered for some very inexpensive items for someone whowants to give them something but doesn't have a lot of money to spend.

bridal registry : You are correct. There is no obligation for the guest to use theregistry. However, most people I know will at least look at the listbefore they buy something. However, the whole point is that people should be thankful that anyonegets them anything at all. My XMIL invited all her friends to mywedding for nothing more than a reciprical gift from all those peoplewhose children had received a gift from her. It was not a fun weddingand the only reason I went along with it was that my XDH had never beenmarried before and wanted a large wedding. If I had to do it all overagain (however, all my friends have strick instructions that if my nameand marriage get mentioned in the same breath they are to shoot meimmediately), I would have a nice, small wedding someplace with only myclosest friends in attendance.I am asking this question out of ignorance, it is not about the rightsand wrongs of registering. I am English and here it is still quiteunusual to register so you'll have to bear with me.My only experience of a registry was a friend of mine who was marryingan American. They sent out a card with their invitations saying "Wehave registered at.....". I then felt obliged to not only buy them agift (which I would have done anyway but don't like feeling that I havebeen forced to) but to buy a gift from the register. Maybe that wasjust because I have so little experience but that's how I felt.
