bridal veils : You're right, LK. Veils and headpieces don't need to cost $450, or even $250 in most cases. I made my veil (ivory tulle, gorgeous ivory satin bow with small lace appliques and three ivory rose buds in the middle and three ropes of lilies of the valley cascading down about 8 inchdes below the bow--it's beautiful, the most gorgeous I've seen--and it cost me $41.00!) If you look at veils that require the same labor and use the same amount of materials but are for first communions, you'll notice the first-communion veils cost much, much less than bridal veils. You could even go to the extent of buying a very plain first-communion veil (just tulle afixed to a comb) and add whatever silk flowers, ribbons, lace, bows, sequins, pearl beading, etc. that will give it the bridal look you're going for, and you'll save yourself a ton of money! And I have seen plenty of very plain first communion veils in religious bookstores, church bazaars and fairs, and church sales office (with other items like bibles, crosses, records, etc). And they certainly don't cost $450. Size won't matter if they use a comb or barrette instead of a headband. So why not save $400 if you can!
bridal veils : Why do bridal veils cost so much more than other veils if you consider they use roughly the same amount of materials (depending on length of veil and type/amount of adornments, of course)? Because it's a wedding, and people are traditionally more willing to pay the extra cost for the higher priced bridal accessories because it's for such a special event--a wedding. I am a seamstress and I've made plenty of first-communion and bridal veils, and I say that bridal veils do not need to cost $450. I do not charge my friends labor if I make their bridal veil or a first communion veil for their daughters. I go shopping with them and let them purchase the materials (and sometimes I don't even have them do that if I had enough material lying around from previous projects or am making the veil as a gift). And I rarely spend more than $20-40 for all the materials needed for a beautiful bridal veil--some simple ones even cost about $10. The most beautiful veil I have ever made (in my opinion) was a 25" lace bridal veil attached to a comb and had just a few white wild flowers across the front--it cost under $5 for all of the materials.
bridal veils : There isn't one veil I've seen in the shops that I couldn't make myself for at least 75-90% less than what it's sold for in that shop. I don't think the labor for a bridal veil is worth a 90% mark-up WHEN you consider that the very same effort is required to make a first communion veil which seems to warrant a much less dramatic mark-up. Why? I thinkI made my own headpiece as well (no veil, just a comb with silk flowers inpurple, white & green, pearls & ribbon). The materials cost me $27Canadian, but... it did take me 5-6 hours to make. I still think $200 is alot to spend on a bunch of fake flowers stuck to myhead for 8 hours of my life, but 6 hours is alot of a craftperson's time.($20 / hour * 6 hours... + materials + overhead...) The cost of theheadpiece is far more the labour than the materials. Like most things, itcomes down to "time or money". I decided it was worth a few hours to save$200 - and I have the satisfaction of wearing something lovely that I mademyself. Not everyone has the time or the inclination.
bridal veils : Why not try a consignment store? I got my veil for $80 that originally cost $250. I was already feeling bad about my $150 headband and veil head-piece (mainly because I don't know how to wear it and because of the price), butall these posts about "Make your own!" were beginning to make me feel reallyawful! Now I feel just a tiny bit better.I made my headpiece and veil, using a glue gun to apply flower sprays,lace and pearls to a barrette, and attaching the veil along the loweredge. It turned out beautiful and stayed beautiful the whole time. Note: this was a late afternoon outdoor wedding in humid Hawaii, and NO PROBLEMat all with the glue melting. I had never even considered it being aproblem beforehand--before I read this--so I'm glad to be lucky enoughthat it wasn't. It was EASY and CHEAP and took only about an hour and ahalf and GORGEOUS.
bridal veils : I'm doing my sister's veil for her wedding. I know how long to make it butI'm not sure how much netting to gather. She is using a headpiece that is across between a headband and a tiara. She wants it to detach from theheadpiece for the reception. Thanks for your help.I can't really tell you about the gathering, except to say that it is best to fit it to the actual headpiece that she will be wearing. When I got married, I bought 3 pre-made pieces - a cathedral train, a blusher, and a small pouf - and had them all put together. Only the pouf was permanently attached to the headpiece. I took it to a lady that I had become friends with through her consignment shop (strictly formals, AND she did alterations and repairs!). I told her what I needed, adn 3 days later, she was done. She whip-stitched the pouf to the headpiece, attached velcro both above and beneath it, then attached the other pieces of velcro to the 2 other pieces of veil. It was lovely, and much easier than trying to move with all of that net streaming behind me!!
