design engagement ring : I usually keep it on when I am sleeping and showering. But when it come toscrubbing the floors and cleaning the house then I take it off. I keep allof my rings by my nightside table so they don't get lost (and I don'tforget where I have put them).Diamonds are "grease magnets" so hand lotion will end up adhering to the stone and making it look dull. My jeweler recommends using a very soft toothbrush and soapy water to clean it up occasionally. You don't mention what kind of setting you have, but be aware that chlorine and other bleach will pit gold so you shouldn't wear a gold setting if you swim regularly. As for chipping the diamond, the stone in my engagement ring has been in my family (and worn fairly continuously in various settings) for over 100 years. I myself have worn it for the past 20 years almost daily. Yes, the stone does have a couple of scratches and there is a small chip at the edge of one of the facets. I know this because my jeweler told me at the time we had it reset. These flaws cannot be seen by the naked eye. I'm currently taking my "new" ring off when I shower, and wearing gloves to do the dishes.
design engagement ring : I usually take it off at night -- not because I can't sleep with it on,but because I can't take it to the shower with me in the morning, and it'ssafer to take it off when I remember. (It will slip off my finger mostdays under water -- other days, my fingers are swollen and the ringdoesn't budge). I put it on after my shower, and wear it all day exceptwhen I' putting cream on my hands, doing dishes or otherwise putting myhands under water for an extended period of time.All of this has more to do with my ring not getting lost than the stones-- the diamonds are in a channel setting and even if some of them areloose, I'd need to really bang my hand hard (enought o injure me!) toknock the stones out. The middle stone is a ruby in a bezel setting,which isn't going anywhere. Both diamonds and rubies are very, very hardstones so I'm not too worried about scratching the stones --I'd say do what makes you comfortable. Because I can't wear this ring tothe shower, I've ended up forgetting it in its holder or by the bedside acouple of times (once in a Parisian hotel! Thank goodness my fiance wasquick to navigate the unfamiliar Metro and rescue both our rings!). I'drather have a ring I didn't have to take off at all, but there was no wayto get a ring which would stay on under water without being unbearblytight when my hands swelled (which they do often)

design engagement ring : The signet is engraved with our first initials intertwined -- it's ahand engraving based on the design my fiance e made when we first moved intogether (We lived together briefly during our fourth year of university, before I took off for London and points beyond). AT that time,the design (B with a J through it) was made into a handmade stained glass'suncatcher" -- it's a large piece, quite stunning, much nicer than itsname entails (Julian was living in an artsy little town the summer beforewe moved in together, and had it custom made, in vivid colours -- my "B"is in red, of Back to the ring, buy the time we moved in together again (this timesporadically again because my parents live in another city, and I go tolaw school in a third), he had the same design on his engagement ring.We're thinking of using a similar design on an embossing stamp -- for useon the invitations, bookmarks, stationary, etc.His ring was cheaper than my (ruby with diamond) ring, but still a bitpricey and an investment. IT doesn't have to be that way., though. Youcan get a nice signet or patterned ring for a couple hundred dollars --just as there's no need for diamonds in a woman's engagement ring (its' amatter of preference only) there's no need for a diamond in a man'sengagement ring either.

I'm a graduate student (as a law student, I'm sure you'refamiliar with student poverty) with no savings and a $2500 debtbecause my ancient car bit the dust and I had to replace it. If I'mlucky, I will have paid off the car before we get married next year,but every hundred dollars I can spare has to go towards paying offthat debt. Dennis, on the other hand, has savings, which he usedto get me my (absolutely stunning) diamond. My parents, needlessto say, are funding our wedding - wonderful, incredible, kind,giving folks that they are.
