(Weare getting married spring 98.)When my Mom wrote out the invitations, which were on really pretty flowery cards, she added a line to the bottom that said:Some people brought them anyway, but I think it's a nice way to phrase it. Who shouldthrow the party?My fiance's parents threw our engagement party on the West Coast, and myparents held one on the East coast. Some of our close friends also threw us aninformal celebration at a local pub. I'm not even sure if there is a ruleregarding who hosts it... I've had friends who've planned their own, and Iactually hosted one for my sister and her fiance.Properly, an engagement party is given by the bride's parents. It is notreally an "engagement party" because the announcement is kept secret untilsometime later in the evening. Engaged couples never host their ownengagement party. In the absence of bride's parents (owing to death orother personal tragedy), another close family member or life-long familyfriend has the honors of hosting the event.Gifts are not given nor expected at an engagement party. However, it isnot uncommon or improper for close family members to bestow gifts upon thecouple, usually heirlooms to be passed on down the family line or other"milestone" type gifts.

I know fora fact that he doesn't drink (at all) and they have a total of 60crystal glasses on the registry (12 of red wine, white wine,champagne, whisky and I can't remember the last). Is this the norm? Iguess because they are only getting married in 2.5 years, if everyonegoes to their registry for birthdays and Christmas until the wedding,they might get everything...

Hasanyone else have any experience with them? They had items that werevague. We couldn't figure out exactly what they wanted. They asked forkitchen gadgets but we didn't know what style the wanted. Isn't thatone of the purposes of a registry?Anyways, I'm just curious. We got engaged on August 11, 1998; by August 20th (and I onlyremember that because the 20th is my parents' anniversary) we'd booked thesite and the rabbi for August 21, 1999.
