engagement ring : M Repossi said: "My trade requires discretion. But since the Britishpress has been building on the reports, I am obliged to establish thetruth and avoid controversy."M Repossi, who said the couple first ordered the ring at his boutiquein the Hotel Hermitage in Monaco on Aug 10, three weeks before theirdeath, insisted that they never said it was an engagement ring. He saidthe couple visited his Monaco shop "in all anonymity" and wanted "tobuy a ring with small triangles of diamonds in the 'Tell me yes' range. He said: "But, during a second visit a few days later, I offered tocreate a jewel that would be somewhat different, not one from mycatalogue, and one improving on the quality by, for example, using acrimped nail rather than pierced metal. Diana seemed to like the young, modern and sober side of our work that contrasted with the retro lookof her royal jewels."The couple made plans for other items of jewellery to be made. MRepossi said: "In fact, I gave Dodi two rings, the one he had orderedand another to serve as a model for other jewels" He said one ring hadbeen returned to him but that he did not know what had happened to theother.
engagement ring : I can't tell you why this is done. My mother, grandmothers, aunts andall my female cousins still wear their engagement rings...all of themwear the wedding band close to the palm (at the bottom) with theengagement ring above it. I always thought that it was just what wasdone...the engagement ring ment an imminent wedding and the band mentthat one had taken place...sort of like a completion in a set! It might just be a regional thing...like I said almost all the women Iknow wear both of them. Those who wear only the wedding band (aroundhere) usually didn't have an engagement ring, or the engagement ringhas been put aside as an heirloom for their children. Other than being a symbol of an event about to happen the rings alsosignify (to me) fidelity, competion, and continuing promise. I havenever considered it a sign that the women who continue to wear theengagement ring as showing off...it just seems to be what everyoneelse around here does--no questions asked!I'm not sure what I am gonna do with my engagement ring after thewedding. I would like to wear it with my wedding band, but that reallydepends on if I can find a band that will fit with my oddly shapedengagement ring band (it has a wave in it with a marquis setting). IfI can't find a band that fits with the ring I will wear the engagementring on another finger! I want to keep it close to me because it wassomething that Rob picked out for me and it holds alot of memories andfeelings for me! engagement ring : I agree that an engagement ring is an extravagence not a necessity. But when I got engaged, I still wanted one. So we decided that anyring would do. It didn't have to be a diamond. So we looked a saphirerings. Nothing really got to me. I wanted it to be special in someway. My grandmother died about 8 years ago leaving a small collection ofjewelry to my mother. I asked her if I could go through it andpossibly recycle something to make it into an engagement ring. So Idid. We dragged out the dusty old box and looked through opals andgarnets and pearls and low and behold, in a tiny box at the bottom ofthe box was: 2 wedding bands and 72 pt diamond ring in a Tiffanysetting.Jackpot! Mom gave me the diamond ring and Gary and I had it reset ina setting that he bought for me (this was his input and I reallydidn't like the Tiffany setting). The whole ring cost $210.00.Cheaper than the sapphire rings.About the wedding bands. It was a mystery at first, because my motherwears the wedding ring that my grandfather gave to my grandfather. Itturned out that one of the wedding bands was from my grandmother'ssecond husband and so was the engagement ring. The second weddingband was my great grandmothers. I will wear that ring as my weddingring and Gary will wear the wedding ring from the second husband. engagement ring : << ---------------------------------------- ---------- >><< The Charter and the Guidelines for Posting to this >><< newsgroup are at >><< ---------------------------------------- ---------- >>Interestingly enough, I was listening to a lecture fromsomeone who mentioned a client of his that caught caught ina double whammy in such a situation by the IRS. Daddy wired$1.8 million (yes, million) to Sonny to buy an engagementfor his future daughter in law. Sonny gives ring to saidwoman, who clearly is not his wife at this time (key point). In that case, there were two taxable gifts--one from Dad toSonny, and a second from Sonny to his future wife. The attorney's comment was that this is the reason why youdo the ring exchange *AFTER* the marriage vows are formallyexchanged <grin>, since at least then the transfer issubject to the unlimited exclusion for transfers betweenhusband and wife.<< ---------------------------------------- ---------- >><< The Charter and the Guidelines for Posting to this >><< newsgroup are at >><< ---------------------------------------- ---------- >>Additionally, you have an executor contract with asignificant prepayment. Gifts between spouses are notsubject to gift tax, so that handles the situation *if* thecouple actually gets married. Prior to the marriage, Isuppose there might be an issue as to whether the gift istechnically "completed" since there is probably an impliedobligation to return the ring if the marriage is called off.I suppose that if the giver of the ring calls off themarriage and does not request the return of the ring, a"gift" occurs at that point.Didn't Oprah, or one of those people, just do a show on thistopic? <g><< ---------------------------------------- ---------- >><< The Charter and the Guidelines for Posting to this >><< newsgroup are at >><< ---------------------------------------- ---------- >>An interesting problem--and, as I noted, in at least onecase the IRS *did* assert a gift tax was due. The issue, atleast from the IRS's perspective, is that there would not bea *legal* obligation to return the gift and there does notappear to be a relationship that would support an "implied"agreement to return the item unless the marriage actuallytakes place <grin>.
