jewelry engagement : I wear a size 6-1/2 and have been told that it is a popular size. Idon't think you should worry about being "cheap"...if I loved the man,I would be happy with a ring made from blades of grass woven together.Pick out something that you consider tasteful and that you think willsuit HER taste. You may even want to consider some alterantive stone...engagement rings don't always have to be made of diamonds, and if shehas a favorite stone (like pearls, for example), you can build fromthere over the years. I think it's also important to take note ofwhether she is content to wear both white and yellow gold, as somewomen have a preference for one or the other. Are you going to keep us posted on what you select, and how you presentthe ring to her? Have you alredy asked her or are you going to askher when you give her the ring?I dont know about anyone else, but I personally wouldn't care if hedidn't have the ring with him when he asks me to marry him. I Lovehim so much, that I wouldn't care if I had a wedding ring either. But, thats just me. And we all know how strange I am. Anyway...if he is reading this...(you know who you are) I wear an 8 1/4! Just in case you were wondering.
jewelry engagement : PS... Good luck with everthing! I hope all of our advice hasn'tconfused you even more!--Standard Disclaimer... MERCY, MERCY, THIS LOVE IS STRANGE, Ellon E. Schnaible AND YOU HAVEN'T EVEN KISSED ME YET! *Sung by Bonnie Raitt*I don't have any specific advice regarding rings, except that you mightthink of going to a custom jeweler for a one-of-a-kind ring. (romanticstory to follow). Also, I would suggest that you give MUCH thought to the presentation of the ring. Where, when, how, etc. you will ask her to marry you. We all hope this will be a for-life commitment and so the day that you agree tomake it should be very special. (romantic story to follow). My (now) husband and I were high-school sweethearts (ahhhh!). We had beendating for four years when I graduated from college. He told me that mygraduation present would be a surprise and I would get it on the Thursdayafter my ceremony. He also told me that my surprise started with a "P".(At the time I desperately wanted a puppy and was SURE that was what I wasgetting!).The big night arrived. I wore a special new dress with gorgeous jewelryand all the extras so I knew I looked nice. He was dressed gorgeously too!And seemed very nervous. He had told me he was taking me out to a specialrestaurant for dinner and we went to the Shadowbrook in Capitola (HIGHLYrecommended for its ROMANCE factor!). We arrived and rode the gondola downto the restaurant. Seated, ordered, and then he excused himself to go tothe bathroom (there go's the romance, I think). He's back in a few minutesand I am wondering why he is so nervous. Anyway, we start talking and thenthe waiter brings a covered dish and puts it in front of me. I think it ismy salad and wait for Greg's to arrive. Finally, I decide to peek underthe lid and he stops me, asking me if there was anything in my life that Icould see lasting forever. I thought about it and the flux my life was in(graduating, graduate school, moving, etc.) and said, "Well, you. Your theonly thing I can see lasting forever." Big smile from him and he tells meto go ahead and lift the cover. I do and there is a ring box sitting on myplate. I nearly faint at this point!!! :*). He reaches over and opensthe box. There is a beautiful diamond ring in it. I can't even speak. He jewelry engagement : To my knowlege, my mother doesn't have an engagement ring. I should ask herbefore stating it as certainty, but in any case, she doesn't wear one. She andmy dad have matching wedding rings made by a friend using 'lost wax' method. They are gold, and are not identical, but since they were made by a friend theymeant much more than ANY they could buy...As a matter of fact, my fiance and I just went on an extensive diamond shoppingbinge. We VERY carefully worked out what a diamond of whatever size wouldcost. It will be up to you, of course, to decide how much you want to spend. We ended up buying my ring at an auction. This requires being able to seethe ring at a preview, and being able to grade it yourself reasonably well. However, it was about 40% less expensive than a jeweler.Approximate cost per caret from a diamond broker/other diamond dealer...4000/caret if 1 caret weight4200/caret if 1.1-1.4 caret weight3800/caret if .85-.95 caret weightso you see, that the price per caret goes up as the stone gets bigger. A .5caret stone will be more like 3000/caret, so 1500$ total.Color... the price will go down about 5% per color grade. A G stone is verynice, but up to about J-L you probably won't see the difference. jewelry engagement : Cut...add 5% for a marquise, subtract 5% for pear or oval. Some older stones(european cut) will sell for less, but they are noticable less brilliant.Clarity...SI1 is not that great. A VS1 is about 10% more, VVS1 10% above thatand IF 10% above that. A SI1 will look a little cloudy, but above that it'shard to tell the difference unless you have a microscope. My sister got 4 quarter caret stones instead of one 1 caret, so she had allthe sparkle for much less money. I ended up with a fairly large singlestone.Congratulations, I'm thrilled about getting married, and hope that you are too. From: ()Subject: Engagement rings Newsgroups: , Date: 1991-04-11 11:25:13 PST A week ago my girlfriend and I engaged to marry at some date"a few years from now"; it'll be a long engagement. Now, I'm completelynew to this, and while I tread the pavement of Berkeley peering in thewindows of jewelry stores, could a few people fill me in on thetradition of the engagement ring, specifically with an eye toward selecting one? Are there symbolic meanings associated with certain stonesthat might be used in the settings? jewelry engagement : I have been doing some research into the possibility of making my ownengagement ring, I'm sure this has been looked into before but I amhaving trouble finding any information on other people trying this.I don't have jewelry or smithing experience (I have only taken anintroduction to jewelry class), so I understand that I can't possiblydo the whole process. I am trying to figure if there is anything I cando. I am not doing this to save money and I am not doing this in ahurry, I have plenty of time :)My current idea is that I carve the design out of wax myself and thenhave someone else cast the ring, mount the diamond and polish. Ifcarving the ring out of wax from scratch is too difficult then I knowyou can buy catalogs of pre-carved ring blanks, and I would be willingto take one of these and modify it to my own design.I am looking for a jeweler in Massachusetts (near Boston preferably)that would be willing to work with me on this, anyone have anypointers?Strongly urge you to go to a class at Metalwerx there in the Boston area.---------------------------------------- --------------M E T A L W E R X10 Walnut St.Woburn, MA 01801Phone:781/937-3532Fax: 781/937-3955Accredited Jewelry Instruction
