You may even want to consider some alterantive stone...engagement rings don't always have to be made of diamonds, and if shehas a favorite stone (like pearls, for example), you can build fromthere over the years. I think it ismy salad and wait for Greg's to arrive. Finally, I decide to peek underthe lid and he stops me, asking me if there was anything in my life that Icould see lasting forever. I thought about it and the flux my life was in(graduating, graduate school, moving, etc.) and said, "Well, you. Your theonly thing I can see lasting forever." Big smile from him and he tells meto go ahead and lift the cover. I do and there is a ring box sitting on myplate. I nearly faint at this point!!! :*). He reaches over and opensthe box. We VERY carefully worked out what a diamond of whatever size wouldcost. It will be up to you, of course, to decide how much you want to spend.We ended up buying my ring at an auction. This requires being able to seethe ring at a preview, and being able to grade it yourself reasonably well.However, it was about 40% less expensive than a jeweler.Approximate cost per caret from a diamond broker/other diamond dealer...4000/caret if 1 caret weight4200/caret if 1.1-1.4 caret weight3800/caret if .85-.95 caret weightso you see, that the price per caret goes up as the stone gets bigger. A .5caret stone will be more like 3000/caret, so 1500$ total.Color... the price will go down about 5% per color grade. A G stone is verynice, but up to about J-L you probably won't see the difference.

Some older stones(european cut) will sell for less, but they are noticable less brilliant.Clarity...SI1 is not that great. A VS1 is about 10% more, VVS1 10% above thatand IF 10% above that. A SI1 will look a little cloudy, but above that it'shard to tell the difference unless you have a microscope.My sister got 4 quarter caret stones instead of one 1 caret, so she had allthe sparkle for much less money.
