platinum engagement ring : My boyfriend are doing some research on engagement rings. I prefer thesilver colored rings, but don't really know the difference between platinumor white gold (besides price)? I'm wondering if a particular metal willtend to require more cleaning, etc.I'm not an expert, but.......the difference has to do with the strength of the metals. The harder themetal, the better it will stand up to wear. White gold is essentially goldwith some other metals mixed in. This makes it much harder than regular gold(yellow gold) and gives it the silvery appearance. Platinum is even harderthan white gold. If you compared two identical rings, the platinum one wouldfeel heavier.I asked the jeweler what that meant in terms of time. He said that if weassumed a given ring style in 18 karat gold lasted 20 years (this number ispretty much out of the air) than the same exact ring in white gold might last30-40 years and the same ring in platinum might last 40-50 years. Basically, the harder the ring, the slower the wear. If you are planning to pick a ringwith an intricate pattern or inlaid diamonds, in may be worth it to go with theharder metal. If you pick a simple style, I don't think it will matter verymuch.

platinum engagement ring : As far as appearance goes, I can't tell the difference between white gold andplatinum. One jeweler admitted to me that he couldn't tell unless he couldfeel the weight.Initially, we made the decision to go with white gold because we didn't thinkthat the difference in wear warranted the extra money. But, we ended upchanging our minds because I fell in love with a setting that only came inplatinum. :-)Oh, there's one other thing. If you go with either white gold or platinum, you're going to want to get a diamond with very clear color. Some diamonds havea yellow tint to them and they look fine with yellow gold, but if you put thesame diamond in a white gold or platinum setting, the yellow tint becomes muchmore evident. (Of course, some people like yellow diamonds, but that'sanother discussion.) And as you might expect, the clearer the color, the moreexpensive the diamond. That's good to know! My platinum ring is at least 80 -90 years old orso already (not sure of the exact date - we got it from an antique shop- but the setting/style and a few other aspects place it around theturn of the century or pre-WWI). I'm hoping it'll last another 100years :-)Is *is* worn somewhat -the inner part of the band is on the thin side(tho the band is thin to begin with)but I love it!

platinum engagement ring : * Sent from RemarQ The Internet's Discussion Network *The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!Platinum is a much harder metal. White gold, and yellow gold are soft. Theywill wear down over the years especially if you use your hands a lot. Ourrings are white gold (couldn't afford platinum, don't like yellow) and after 31/2 years, hubby's has lost all of the rough texture that was once in themiddle. It has gone completely smooth. Mine is still rough. As I understandit, this would not have happened in platinum.I was told that white gold will get a yellowish cast with time. I don'tknow how yellowish or how much time, though. I work for a jewelry store in Michigan, and just wanted to give you my info. Looks-wise, you cannot tell the difference between platinum & white gold. Platinum is denser (which makes it heavier), but it also acts more like taffywhen the jewelers work with it, making it more forgiving to bending. This iswhy we prefer to use platinum heads when setting a diamond, verses white gold. White gold can be more brittle if there is a problem when they cast the heads(the whole piece that holds a diamond), and can lead to a problem called "ProngSheering" (When the top section of the prong breaks off for no reason at all). If a prong of a platinum head gets moved or pulled away from the stone, it'spossible to be able to push the prong back into place without fear of itbreaking. Where as with white gold, that prong may break when they try to moveit back. If the prong goes back into place, but bends again, it is likely tobecome weak & the entire head (not just the prong) will have to be replaced. Therefore, Platinum seems to be less problematic. As far as white gold is concerned, it will take on a slightlytarnished-look over the years since gold is naturally yellow with alloys addedto make it white. White gold is definitely less costly than Platinum (normally WG costsapprox. 1/2 that of platinum). However, in the long run, we find thatplatinum stands the test of time a lot better. Hope this is of some help!!

My wedding/e-ring set is platinum with diamonds. The differenceis subtle, but it's there. The gold is shinier. Now I can tell platinumand white gold apart in a jeweler's case.-- hillary israeli..........Official Token "So that's 2 T-1s and a newsfeed....would you like clues with that?" for debugging your net or deworming your pet Net Access...The NSP for ISPs....The NOC that rocks around the clock.Sorry to dispute you, but the only way to tell a white gold piece and aplatinum piece apart (other than the price tag, stampings inside the piece, orusing a metal detector) is by weight - other than maybe the finish (texture, how it's polished, or if the white gold has turned yellowish due to the alloysin the metal) that is on the piece, there is NO way to tell them apart bysight. I'm curious how you would be able to tell them apart without eventouching them... I've worked for the jewelry industry for 5 years haven't beenable to find anyone else (Including my bosses and our other jewelers) that hasthat ability.

platinum engagement ring : Another possibility is that the Jewelers rhodium plated the white gold to lookmore white. Rhodium is a liquid form of platinum and is widely used for thatpurpose. Platinum/Rhodium is a pure metal - it doesn't have any alloys. Therefore, it is also used when people have an allergy to nickel or gold andcan be helpful in solving the "My jewelry turns my skin black" problem. The platinum looks more like it has anundertone of steel grey to me, whereas the white gold looks more like anundertone of bright silver. My husband thinks so, too. Go figure.
