For my folks' 50th I racked my brainfor months, knowing no matter what I did, they wouldn't like it. So Ifinally had a brainstorm: I have an old 8x10 wedding portrait of them(1944). Had it double-matted and framed in a 16x20 beautiful frame. I didthis not because they might like it (although I hoped they would), butbecause I figure some day it will be handed down to me and to my children.Would dinner out with the family work? What about a collection of familyphotos or any photos you can scare up of them and friends. What aboutarranged dinners with them and friends, one couple/couple of friends at atime? Would seem like less of a "party", I'd think. You wouldn't evenhave to be there -- arrange the check in advance with the restaurant. If they don't want a party, then by George, take them at their word anddon't throw a party! (My oldest living sib <naturally cranky, at that)made it clear to her daughter that she didn't want a party on or for her75th birthday. Daughter planned a surprise party. My sister got wind ofit <don't be lookin' at me!> and arrived at the party two hours later thanshe was supposed to have. Several guests had left by then. Guess who wonthe "Gotcha!!" There was a fair amount of "Oh, poor daughter, to havedone all that and not be appreciated." And I'm thinkin', "Well, fercripesake, you KNEW she didn't want a party." I saved my sympathy for adifferent cause.)

Send a letter to any family or friends you can thinkof, asking that those folks record a memory of a good time spent with thefolks; assemble the letters in an album. Include a SASE and give adeadline at least three days before you *really* need to have it back. How about professionally done photos of you and bro (and any other sibs orfamily members)? They were just released earlier this year solots of people have not even seen them yet in the stores.Everyone receives in their own way. But, even those who appear to beungracious, will not just put $50 away and forget about it. The coins come in$25 rolls. I just bought two rolls in Safeway at the Customer Service counter!Even if your brother and you are not close to your parents, hopefully you willbe able to be present with them to celebrate such a special occasion. I envyyou so much. No matter any faults that I would chose to remember about myparents, I would give anything in the world to have them with me today. Theywere definitely not perfect, but they tried their best with what skills theyhad. Not a day goes by that I don't miss them. I would not presume to make excuses for your parents, but do what you can tomake it an enjoyable day for everyone, including yourself. If your parentschoose to be miserable at the visit, then so be it. However, if you havechildren, you will be setting a wonderful example for them in how to deal withdifficult situations and people.
