wedding bouquets : My sister's wedding yesterday was WONDERFUL! We had only one extremely minorproblem. It was so minor that it's not worth even mentioning. It was a GREATday! I can only hope mine will be as wonderful one day! While I didn't catch the bouquet, I ended up with it. (My cousin, who is 12 Ithink, caught it and then handed it to me, saying she didn't want it.) Mysister didn't express an interest in having it, but I hate the idea of itwilting and my throwing it away, since I AM the one who got it.I was wondering if any of you had any ideas of how to preserve it. It is notin my budget for me to have it done professionally, unfortunately. The lady atthe florist suggested I lightly (whatever "lightly" means) spray it withhairspray: Aussie Instant Freeze. Then, she says to put it in a bowl (orsomething so it's not touching the ground) away from sunlight and let it dryout. She says that with a couple of exceptions, the flowers should dryreasonably well. Then, I'll either give it to my sister or keep it if shedoesn't want it. (It's the first time I've ever ended up with a briadalbouquet, even if I DIDN'T actually catch it. ;) )
wedding bouquets : So, what do you think of this technique? Or any others? I really don't wantto press the flowers, but I'm up for suggestions. The bouquet is in my fridgenow, but I'd like to make a decision by tonight.I'm glad the wedding went well. :-) I know nothing about bouquets, however. <g>Phebes "If you can't change your fate, change your attitude." --Amy Tan Glad the wedding went well.....Sorry, I don't know about preserving the flowers, hope someone else has ideasfor you.Nettie</ font color>Happiness held is the seed, happiness shared is the flower.I've always heard that it's good to dry flowers upside down. Also, they have atype of silicone that you can pour over the flowers (while there in atupperware container or something similiar) and that is suppose to help drythem and keep their color.Lynn My Orioles SUCKplease keep your mind in~~~it is far too small to be out alone.Aren't weddings beautiful?? :)So nice that you ended up with the flowers. I've heard a few times, if you letthe bouquet hang upside down somewhere, they will turn into pretty driedflowers. I've never tried it, but they looked pretty on TV.Good luck. wedding bouquets : Hi Jodi, So far, for all the sites we've talked to, we've said we're planning an "event" (when pressed, we describe it as a faimily reunion/get together). It turns out that the ones we like have their pricing policies printed in brochures which don't distinguish weddings from other events rate-wise. (Not the only reasons to like these sites, but it hasn't hurt!) A wedding is, in fact, an event (and often is also a family reunion of sorts), so I don't think this sort of inquiry is stoking any hellfires. Haven't talked to florists yet, but I've heard tell of requests for "handheld floral arrangements" which were much cheaper (like half to a third the price of wedding bouquets that were EXACTLY THE SAME)...the trick is to describe what you want, but not what exactly you want it for until the price has been set. (I guess this may involve doing some homework ahead of time...) I'm guessing cakes will cost a bunch more if the W word has been uttered. However, at least part of this is probably due to the fact that most wedding cakes involve more challenging architecture than your standard full-sheet bakery cake. (Does the architecture totally account for the hike in the prices? Probably not. Does anyone know a good way to describe a wedding cake that doesn't make it obviously for a wedding?) If you're just as happy with a sheet cake as with a tiered one, that may be the way to go. BTW, one difference with, say, catering an "event" instead of a W-word is that your caterer may not be so quick to tell you what you simply *must* have. (We *know* all the good caterers out there wouldn't dream of doing this, but there are always a few...) wedding bouquets : Janet (& Alex, Sept 1997)seeing three sites tomorrow and hoping to have a decision by next week! Maybe you could tell me what other reason people would order "handheldfloral arrangements" for? A corsage is a corsage, a hand constructedbouquet is a hand constructed bouquet and the costs shouldn't be differentjust because you use the "w" word. If, however, you want your flowersdelivered, discussed during a 1 to 3 hour consultation, set-up at a site,"constructed" for elaborate centerpieces, arranged on special fixtures, dealt with or picked up after the event, moved from one location toanother, pinned on customers, "maintained" during the event- all functionswhich don't occur except rarely in any case excluding a wedding, youshould expect to pay more than you would by just ordering a corsage andpicking it up yourself for aunt fifi's birthday. Lots of weddingcustomers think that there's no extra work involved in doing a wedding andthey couldn't be farther from the truth. We can't provide all these extraservices out of the goodness of our hearts, and our families would like tospend some time with us instead of us "working a wedding". You have topay people extra to provide extra service. wedding bouquets : Very few birthday cakes picked up at the bakery by the customer haveelaborate construction or decoration. If you're happy with a basicsheet/round cake with the limited decoration of a birthday cake, then youcan certainly save lots of money by stating your needs. And any baker whocharges more just because it would be for a wedding should be avoided atall costs- please, bake it yourself rather than pay through the nose forNOTHING extra. However, if you want a constructed cake, delivered by abakery, set-up on site by a bakery, custom designed to your theme/wishes,chosen after a one to two hour consultation with the baker, decorated withitems which may have taken DAYS to make, please expect to pay more thanyour average birthday cake. Wedding customers may forget that the 'w' word implies that extra care, design, and service are expected. And they should expect to pay extra. Please, if you your expectations are for average services, state that factand most vendors will be happy to accomodate your needs at an averageprice. I'm not trying to be snippy here at all. Just MHO.Good LuckPaul
