One of my friends (a Thai) had topostpone his wedding and work hard for 5 years before he saved enough forthe dowry....We've been married for almost 8years now, have 3 children and I can assureyou that I don't feel like an ATM... sometimes a family genuinely needs helpand then we help. Apart from these occasions we play Santa once a year onour yearly visit...I am going to her mother's home to sort this out and I think I will pay forthe mother's health insurance so there is no talk of operations. If anyoneelse in her family wants an operation I will just have to do it myself.Seriously I think it will all work out. It will be a sad event if I am everpressed to spell it out for the family about the money issue. I think theyshould read the story called "The Little Red Hen" which is about a chickengoing around asking everyone for help to grow wheat and cook bread and noone would help but when it came time to eat the bread everyone showed up andthe little red hen told them,you never helped me plant the wheatyou never helped me water the cropyou never helped me harvest the yieldyou never helped me grind the wheatyou never helped me bake the breadso... you shall not help me eat it

If you had asked, wewould have been delighted to oblige." And the truth of the matter isthat they probably would. My wife and I are (modestly) generous toher family when there is a real need, but a consequence of that isthat whenever we need anything to be done around the house or in thegrounds it is done quickly, diligently and gratefully. Don't letanyone kid you that the Thais are institutionally lazy. They arenot.The amount is more likely 10,000 - 15,000 baht for an Isan Villagegirl.You will be expected to pay for the wedding in addition to Sin Sot andthis is where her parents will try to extra a lot of unnecessarymoney. A Isan Village buddhist ceremony should not cost much. Youreally shouldn't be looking to pay more than $2k USD for the wholeshebang including Sin Sot if indeed she is 1. A Virgin, and 2. An Isangirl from a village and a low class family.

On Saturday Oct. 17th will be the first (known) wedding by two peoplewho met on this group: Kathy Brown and Sammy Roeland. These two peoplewill be taking their vows this Saturday in a wedding cermony. They areclose friends of mine who I met on this group, many of you who also havegrown to enjoying their company over the years. So not only did thisgroup bring these two people together for marriage but also broughtfriendship to many of us. I personally wish them my very best. wedding cermony : In either case, the wedding cermony is now over and Kathy and Sam arenow offically married. The wedding and the reception was really nice.The entire event was done in the Renaissance time. We all had customes, Iwas the best man. We had some very nice and detailed decorations,banners, armored knights and we even carried swords. It was verydetailed, the entire cermony to reflect the Renaissance time. I hope tobe putting a few pictures up of the wedding, on the web page this comingweek. The wedding and reception took place at the Marina Village area. Nope, not the wedding night :-). Though it was kind of funny, when wewere in the rehearsal of the actual cermony and you get to that part ofsaying, "I do"...they said in the rehearsal, "I will" :-).
