wedding gowns : Has anyone ever noticed problems in drycleaning the imitation pearl beadsand sequins used on wedding gowns? I've found that some "pearls on astring" (the cheapest brands) say "for craft use only, not drycleanable".Some say "washable", some not. Most packages of pearls and beads (Daricefor example) don't specify any care limitations.Might glued-on pearls and beads detatch during drycleaning? In the pastI've sewn these ornaments onto gowns, but I'm considering fabric-gluingthem to one project to save time. Does anyone know whether Aleene's TackyGlue would hold up with drycleaning solvents? Its package says "notwashable." I've read recommendations for "Fabri-Tac" and various "bridalglues." Do you know about them? I'm also concerned about the pearls usedon trims-by-the-yard, such as those by Heritage and Wyla.-- Janet Russell, member Professional Association of Custom ClothiersBridal & Special Occasion Designs, Eugene, Oregon phone (541) 461-2406I made my daughter's wedding dress almost two years ago. I checked out all of the glues on the market. The only glue I found that dried clear, withstands drycleaning, and dries flexible (not stiff) was a bridal glue distributed by Washington Milner's Supply back east. If you want more info on how to order from them let me know. They only do wholesale business and they helped me find a local person who would order for me. I glued pearls, sequins and glitter on to her bodice and sleeve lace - it sounds gaudy but it wasn't. However, I just bought pearls from the fabric store. It wasn't until after the wedding that I thought about drycleaning and it's effect on the pearls. A suggestion from my drycleaner was to make a sample of the lace with the pearls, sequins, glitter and glue then have them dryclean it and check the results. She said that the gown will usually withstand ONE cleaning but don't count on it. We still haven't had my daughter's dress cleaned yet. Good luck.

wedding gowns : Washington Millinery Supply Inc.P.O. Box 5718 Deerwood, Md. 20855Check for a phone number and call them. Ask them to verify the dry cleanability of their glues - Can't hurt. Here's an update on my quest to identify drycleanable fabric glues andimitation pearls for use on wedding gowns:I called Aleene's Customer Service Hotline and was told that none of theAleene's glues are drycleanable!I called Heritage Trimming, which makes some handsome pearls-on-a-string.The word there was, "we have been told by our suppliers that our pearlbeads are drycleanable, but we cannot guarantee it."A customer service rep at the International Fabricare Institute (anassociation of drycleaners) who happened to have worked in a bridal shopfor several years, suggested that I use good ol' Elmer's Glue! It doesdissolves after a long contact with water, but it withstands drycleaningsolvents and does resists yellowing with time better than most otherglues, she said. She could not name any pearls that would be good, but didsay that polystyrene pearls would definitely dissolve in drycleaningsolvents.By the way, the IFI lady suggested that wedding gowns be stored clean inacid-free tissue paper, in a controlled temperature, stable humidity,insect-free environment, but NOT vacuum-sealed (or nitrogen-packed) in abox.. She said a true vacuum seal would crush the gown, and the nitrogenwhich replaces air in the "heirlooming" process only lasts about 6 monthsbefore it escapes through the plastic or the box in which the gown ispacked. Plastic would retain humidity and invite a buildup of aspergillusmold ("black mildew").

wedding gowns : A customer service rep at Darice told me that while Darice cannotguarantee drycleanability of its craft pearls, "we know that a lot ofcustomers use them on wedding gowns and we assume we would have gottencomplaints if they developed problems in drycleaning, and we haven't heardany such complaints."Everyone I talked to recommended making up a small sample of variousfabrics, glues and pearl beads and sending it through a drycleaner's on atrial run. (I was told by IFI that most US drycleaners use the sameprocess, involving perchloroethylene; very few use the other, petroleum, process, so any drycleaner's would do for the test.) Guess I'll have to dothat...-- Janet Russell, member Professional Association of Custom ClothiersBridal & Special Occasion Designs, Eugene, Oregon phone (541) 461-2406Aleene's also has a product called "OK-to-wash-it", I think it is either a spray or clear-drying glue-like thing. I've seen them (on the TV show) use it for keeping things on T-shirts, etc., that they've glued on with the Tacky glue. I'm not sure about dry-cleaning, though. I say call Aleene's and check into it... they seem to like people to use their 1800 # (altho I don't know off-hand what it is, it's probably on the glue bottle somewhere...)

wedding gowns : ** In article (Janet Russell) writes:** ** >Might glued-on pearls and beads detatch during drycleaning? Does anyone know whether Aleene's Tacky** >Glue would hold up with drycleaning solvents? Its package says "not** >washable." I only sold wedding dresses for a summer, so that hardly make me anexpert, but we were always told glued on beads or sequins will NOT hold upto dry cleaning - the glue will dissolve in the d.c. chemicals. When I made my wedding dress (several years ago). I bought bridalquality pearls and sequins from an upscale fabric store (your Cloth World, House of Fabrics probably won't have these). Theyare dry-cleanable. I sewed them on by hand. I thought it really went fast, even though I had never beaded before. When I took my dress to be cleaned after the wedding, the drycleaningpeople complemented me on the quality of my dress, and on hownone of my beading and sequins fell off, so it appears that thisis a common problem with commercial gowns.
