wedding invitations : My fiance suggested to me that maybe we could design ourown wedding invitations. Being a computer engineer,and always wanting to do more with my computer, I thoughtthis would be a neat idea. Has anyone out therecreated their own invitations on computer? Whatsoftware program did you use? What kind of paper?Did you mass produce them using your printer, ordo you make one master copy, and let the local printingbusiness make the copies? Do you have any hints, orsuggestions? I guess we could also do our ownwedding programs.I made our wedding invitations. They are very simple, but a couple of friends who've seen them think we had them done, when we really printed them at home. Here are the details:Paper: (don't recall the brand at the moment) plain white greeting card stock with an embossed frame around 1/2 of the 8.5"x11" sheet (which you fold in half along a pre-scored line), purchased at our local computer store; it looks very much like the "formal embossed frame" stationery found in most "real" invitation catalogues; the only con to this is that the envelopes are kind of cheesy - very flimsy and cheap, but there are nicer envelopes available if you check out stationery or office supply stores; the best part: $8 US for 25 invitations, and you if you don't buy enough the first time, you can get more without having to pay your printer another arm and leg.
wedding invitations : Software: Good ol' MS Word for Windows; I'm sure any other word processing software will work just as well; I did spend a few extra bucks for a CD of fonts (clue: "1250 fonts" means about 200 fonts with every possible permutation thereof - bold, italic, light, sans serif, etc.) Printer: I used an Epson 600 inkjet printer at 720 dpi. (I printed one at 1440 dpi, but it didn't improve the quality, it just took longer to print.) The Epson is also very easy to run envelopes through, so, just for fun, I printed the return address on the envelope flap. I am very pleased with how it all turned out.Hints/suggestions: First off, make sure you have the name of the church (or other location) worded correctly before you print 75 invitations! :( (Proofread, proofread, proofread.) Print in small batches, so if the printer messes up you haven't ruined half of your stationery. In the event the printer does mess up (toner streaks, ink splotches, etc.), run a couple of invites on plain paper to make sure the problem has gone away before putting your stationery back in.
wedding invitations : Depending on your time frame/patience level/printer quality, I think you would be happier with the results of printing each invitation rather than photocopying. Just a note: I had a friend who also did her own invitations, and she used stock that was microperforated and came 4 to a sheet. I don't care what the manufacturers claim, you CAN see the perforations after the fact. Their wedding was very informal, so it didn't really make a difference that the edges of the wedding invitation were fuzzy, but it's something to keep in mind.The printing process also depends on how many invitations you'll beprinting and how much time you have to spend. If you're sending 300invites, consider offset printing at a local print house. Whatever youdo, don't photocopy it - it won't look good.If you'll be printing it yourself, estimate your time to do it -- andtriple it. Things will go wrong.If you're designing your own invites and you want just words with a nicefont - go with MS Word (or WordPerfect). If you want more artwork, youcan still stick with Word for some things, but if you want to get moreoriginal try a desktop publishing package like Adobe Illustrator orMacromedia Freehand or Corel Draw. There are more artistic options withthese. If you have never heard of (much less used) these programs andhave very limited time, stick with Word. They're not difficult, but notsomething you want to diddle with on a deadline.Also, if you're considering colored ink on the invites, considercarefully the color of the paper you'll be printing on (if it's anythingother than stark white). The paper changes the color of the ink and youcould go in circles for hours trying to get it right.
wedding invitations : Some friends of mine just wrote the text in MSWord and ran heavier paperthrough their laser printer. The invitations looked great! And you cando personalized invitations this way ("....request the honor of JANEDOE'S presence...").If you want to do graphics in the same color as the text, check out thesilhouettes in your software's clip art collection. You can print out asingle black-and-white master of the invitation, and then the copyingcompany can change it to a different ink color using their copymachines. Some copy companies offer a choice of copying or printing, soyou can choose which looks better.If you decide to have printing done from your disk, INSIST that you geta proof before the entire job is run. And have someone other than youand your future spouse proofread it.I print many invitations that have been designed by the bride and groom.Mostly they send me the artwork and wording (sometimes it is totallydone so all I do is print it on beautiful card stock) Sometimes Ireceive the artwork, and we go over the wording and I print it in raisedink any color they choose. wedding invitations : I have many different papers not showing on my web site, but there are some very pretty ones showing.I only need one master or two in case of a problem with the paper, likea fold in the wrong place etc. wedding programs.I have wedding programs that I can print up the same way, or I can sellyou the paper blank for you to do at your leisure. The paper is 8 1/2 x11" so you can print landscape in your printer. We printed on thewhite paper and then glued each one in the blue note card. These were for *notifying* people we don't talk to regularly that arealmost def. coming. I used Word for Windows 95 with "Garamond" font. It looks super fancy andnice (if I do say so myself)
