wedding music : It's nice to see a wedding music list that's REALLY different--(and to see abride with the "courage" and creativity to make it so). Congrats, although Ihave to admit, some of your don'ts will probably end up on my list of do's atmy own wedding reception next year. But I like the idea of Billie Holliday forthose "quiet moments" in the reception.I pick up my fellow travellers from their breakfastin a very grumpy mood. (Which is an entirely differentstory, completely unrelated to music.) And, in fact,the last thing in the world I want to do is to chat withthese two women for what should be 7 1/2 hours.Now, I've got to explain something here about Providence,and about the trip. You can pick up good radio for abouthalf of the journey. So, if all ya had was a car radio,you could tune in for the first 45 minutes out of Providence,pick up some Hartford stations briefly in central Conn.,listen to one of 100 stations as you pass NY (though asurprisingly low percentage of them are worth the time)hold out during the short quiet spot till you pick upthe Philly stations, fade out again till Baltimore stationsare within range, and then you are set through to home.(If your home happens to be in Northern Virginia.)
wedding music : If you don't want to be at the mercy of the radio stations,you buy and install a nice fancy car stereo with a tape deck.Then you can have silence for the entire trip, as during thenight, your car stereo will have been stolen in one of Providence'sprograms of "redistribution of wealth."Me, I wired a pair of RCA jacks into my cheap stock car radio,and put a couple of plugs onto the headphone lines from a pairof walkman headphones I found crushed in the street. (This iscalled tape-deck luxury on a grad student salary. All partsinvolved were salvaged. Pulled the RCA jacks off a busted upcompact stereo system someone had thrown off a roof and pitchedin the trash.) Where was I? Oh, yes; so now, all I have to dois plug the headphone plug into a walkman and the rca plugs intothe car stereo and instant pull out stereo.All of this rambling merely to indicate to you that I'm goingto provide a list of the tapes I listened to en route. Thepre-wedding music.So, I started out with Prokofiev's Piano Sonata 7. This didnot get a good reception from my travelling companions. However,I didn't much care, as I wasn't feeling exceptionally wellintentioned towards them. However, I thought I might try toease up on them a little, so I next went with Michael Haydn'sSymphony 30. They didn't appreciate the effort. Schumann's3rd Symphony followed. And then, for my benefit again,
