wedding traditions : There does not seem to be bridemaids for a traditional Chinese wedding, though.Any flowers should be O.K. Just avoid white ones. Better to be redones.Chinese people typically are quite conservative and of course there isno dancing party after the ceremony.--Tung-chiang Yang , China_faq.htmlSchool of Engineering and Applied Science, UCLA, USAFeb 7, 1996Yes, red is the color for wedding while the white is for funeral. But most Chinese thesedays accept the white dress for brides. And many of them are doing so NOW.Yes, this is true. In fact, white is the colour of mourning in the Chineseculture. However, most Chinese brides these days (especially in NorthAmerica) wear white anyways. Some people say it's okay; others say that the bridesmaids shouldn't"compete" with the bride, if the bride is wearing red also. But if thebride is wearing white, then red for the bridesmaids wouldn't be so bad.I have heard that Chinese typically don't dance at their weddings - Yes, the Chinese typically don't dance at their weddings, but nowadays, alot of them do.Also, did you know that the groom picks up the bride for the ceremony inthe Chinese culture? He has to pay the bridesmaids $9.99, $19.99, or$99.99 before the bridesmaids will let him in. The reason for all the "9"sis because it is supposed to mean that the couple will have a longmarriage. The bridesmaids take the money and go out for a nice meal afterthe wedding.

wedding traditions : BY the way, I think these are mainly Cantonese traditions, so if yourfriend is not Cantonese, she would have different traditions. _____^___ \ / ^ | Tina Choy (& sometimes equal half Tim Pohl) / \_/ 0 \ University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB CANADA / \ e-mail: / ____ 0 ---------------------------------------- ----/ / \___ _/ <--- my black lab ZarleyIn article Tina Choy wrote:Another way. Watch the movie "Wedding Banquet", which is available inany of the Block Buster store. It gives you a vivid way of Chinesewedding in America. It depends. "Playing games on the newly married" seems to be a modernhabit for Chinese culture. Traditionally you won't see friends playingMajong on the wedding night in the room for the happy couple.======================================== ============Tingli Pan wrote:--Tung-chiang Yang , China_faq.htmlSchool of Engineering and Applied Science, UCLA, USAFeb 10, 1996DON'T WEAR BLACK! I've been brought up with the belief that black is theChinese color of death, and to wear black at a happy occasion like awedding is to desire to bring bad luck upon the couple. Of course, in theU.S. black is the color of elegance, so much black is worn anyway. Itkind of depends on how traditional the bride and her family are. Whiteand red are generally reserved for the bride to wear, and I don't know ofany bad luck flowers. Bridesmaids dresses don't have to be red (pink andlavender are popular colors), but definitely not black, and definitelysomewhat conservative in style (i.e. not too too clingy and not a lot ofchest and cleavage showing).

wedding traditions : As for that movie "The Wedding Banquet"... I saw it again over the weekend(not because of this thread, just coincidental timing), and want to saythis: Don't believe everything you see" in the movie, or at least take itwith a grain of salt. Certainly don't follow the examples you see in thatmovie! :) I've been to dozens of Chinese weddings, and have never everheard of or been part of the wedding night mah-jong and games shivaree(not to say it doesn't happen, just that I've never known it to happenpersonally). You ought to to talk to someone from the family to get an idea of thetraditional kinds of things they expect; don't depend solely on theresponses you get here. You can expect to have to produce a tea ceremony, red cloth for signing at the banquet, red envelopes with cash, andpossibly the groom having to barter for the bride on the morning of thewedding. My family is 100% Chinese (mom from China, dad from Hong Kongwith no non-Chinese blood mixed in there anywhere), but prettyAmericanized, so we didn't do a lot of the more Chinesey things when mybrother got married. Mostly the things my more traditional aunts insistedbe done so my brother and sister-in-law could minimize the bad luck theydon't avoid from the get-go on the wedding day.

wedding traditions : What you said is true, that black and white at times imply death forChinese culture. However, nowadays more and more people adopt to thewestern style of wedding, and you know, the bride always wears white, and the groom wears something formal, which can be black. Again, thequestion is how traditional the bride's family is.Young people like the kind of games for the newly married. I admit thatI come from Taiwan, not Mainland China, but each of my college classmateswill go through the games more or less like what you saw in "The WeddingBanquet". Yes, one of my classmates was forced to let his bride take offall his clothes under the comforter before we guests were willing toleave. Again, the question is how traditional the bride's family is.For young people, you guests strike the forks on the glassware meansyou want the couple to kiss each other, but doing this in front oftraditional Chinese seniors will be viewed as rudeness and gets frownedupon.--Tung-chiang Yang , China_faq.htmlSchool of Engineering and Applied Science, UCLA, USAFeb 14, 1996

wedding traditions : I am currently planning my own Chinese wedding, where I am Chinese(the bride) and my fiance is Caucasian-Canadian. From my pastexperience and current planning, it is believed that the bride shouldchange three times traditionally throughout the evening. She normallystarts out in her "western" white bridal gown, then later changes intothe traditional Chinese red dress ("Cheong Sam") for the traditionaltoasting, where the entire bridal party walks to each table at thebanquet to be toasted with whiskey (usually Johnny Walker) and shechanges a third time into a party frock or dress to leave the banquetat the end of the evening. This is traditionally followed byCantonese Chinese, but it depends where the bride or her family maycome from.Chinese red and gold traditional invitations is part of the Chinesetradition, often in many cases it is expected that the bride should betaken to the church or hall from the home of her parents. Othertraditions include having a tea ceremony (formal) where the brideserves tea to her new in-laws and the groom to his new in-laws.As noted, the colour RED is colour that means happiness and GOLD meanswealth and good fortune. Actually, for my wedding, they are mycolours and I am incorporating them in the bridesmaids dresses, (ie.red dresses, my choice), in the flowers and with ribbon, wherepossible. I am also having the traditional red and gold Chineseinvitations.
